Nutrition Month Culminating Activity

I may have found a milk substitute where calcium is concerned.

Moringga or malunggay has about four times the calcium in milk. I found that out today while I was trying to look for info about moringga. Okay....I think I have to find out just how much moringga has four times the calcium in milk.  Note to self:  Do more research on moringga.

Anyway, here's what I know.  It's good for breast-feeding women.  I actually ate a lot of it after I gave birth.   It's rich in iron, vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, Vitamin C, copper, calcium, chromium, magnesium, phosphorous, etc. etc.  Wow!  Good thing I like moringga.  

So should I say, "Goodbye milk tea, hello more moringga"?  Hmmm...I wonder what moringga shake tastes like. Or maybe, I should look for moringga tea and THEN add milk. That's even more nutritious!

So why am I talking about nutrition all of a sudden?   The kids at school inspired me to think of vegetables...weird huh?

Nutrition Month is celebrated throughout the country every July.  This month's theme is "Pagkain ng Gulay, Ugaliin, Araw-Araw Itong Ihain"   (Make It a Habit to Eat Vegetables; Serve It Every Day)

The nationwide campaign is done with the help of public and private schools across the country.

To make it meaningful for the kids, we had several activities, including cooking demonstrations which were done by parents, poem writing contest (which I judged), essay writing contest, parade of vegetables, best vegetable costume which included a question and answer portion, etc.

Today, the kids paraded around the campus in their vegetable costumes.   

Then they shared useful information about their chosen vegetables.

     

The most popular vegetables were carrots, corn and squash.  

There were only two kids dressed like moringga. :(

And I didn't know that broccoli had cancer-fighting properties.  I have to eat more of this! If only it wasn't that expensive!  The more I read about broccoli, the more I want to eat it!

Oh...and I wanted to show you what the Science teachers gave me as a token for judging the Poem Writing Contest.

I love the gift!  So cute!  I already have three ports in my laptop though.  I don't see why I'll be needing that many.  Still, the gift made my day!

What I Love about Being a Teacher

Some people would probably wonder what I like about my job.  Well, honestly, I can only think of five things:

1.  I get to have a summer break which is usually around one month and a two-week Christmas break.

2.  Knowing that I had made a difference in the life of a child and being appreciated for it.

    Below  is a facebook conversation I had with Adie, one of my former students.  She was under me when she was in the fourth and fifth  grade.  She is now 17 years old and has turned out to be every inch a lady.  I feel pride everytime she would tell me that I am one of those who made her who she is today.

 3. I get to explore my creative side like designing classrooms like this and getting a trophy for it.

4. I get to choreograph dance steps and teach my pupils to dance and sing and act.

      Here are eleven of my 3rd grade pupils singing and dancing You're Never Fully Dressed without a Smile from the musical, Annie.

                 

This was a contest and we won first prize. I was so proud of them AND of myself!

5. seeing my students look all grown-up like the four girls I'm with in the photo below

Well, I guess everything has to do with some sort of fulfillment.

Last Year's Bulletin Boards

It's almost that time of the year when I should be busy conceptualizing and making my classroom's bulletin boards. This year, however, I won't be doing any of that for I have requested not to be an adviser anymore. I'm super excited about this change, actually. But now, I miss making bulletin boards. This has prompted me to write this post and to post pics of the ones I made last year.

The one above is my English bulletin board. Below is a closer look at the origami fish I made.

Below is another bulletin board that shows the core values of our school. We call these values our 5 C's. I spent one whole day making this. I spent four hours making and putting up the grass alone!

This is the birthday board inside my classroom. The cupcakes were printed by another teacher and given to me. I like the gift that I put up here. The gift looks 3D with the bow I made!
